As part of this month’s focus on male skin, I have been conducting some interviews with guys, from various backgrounds, ages and skin types, to see what they think about skin care and what is their idea of beauty.
This interview is with the lovely Steven Corfield, who you may know is a Yankee Candle expert on QVCUK and also owns his own shop selling Yankee Candles in Cardiff at The Yankee Store. Whenever I have watched Steven presenting the Yankee Candle shows, I’ve always thought he is someone who takes pride in his appearance and would love to know more how he looks after his skin, hair and nails.
Tell me more about yourself and your background
I’m Steven Corfield and I’m 39 years old. I run and own my own Yankee Candle store and I have the huge privilege of being a brand ambassador for Yankee Candles representing them on the shopping Channel QVCUK.
I always try to look my best whether I’m in the public eye, on television or out and about with friends and family.
If you didn’t have your own Yankee Candle shop and represent them on QVCUK, what other job role do you think you would be good at or enjoy doing?
I always wanted to be cabin crew and I think I might have done that, but I also see that it’s extremely hard work but it would be wonderful to see the world as your job. I also used to model, not for very long but I wish I had stuck at that a bit more.
Do you have a healthy lifestyle? Is it important to you how you look to others?
I try to be as healthy as I can, however age is creeping up and it takes effort now where as a few years back I didn’t have to do anything. I always think it’s important to look good for yourself and your partner.
What is your version of beauty?
My version is someone who takes care of themselves, not necessarily caked in makeup but clearly make an effort and of course beauty comes mostly from within. I think as long as you’re beautiful on the inside then it exudes on the outside.
Did your dad teach you how to shave or was it friends that taught you what to do?
My dad indeed taught me, I have fond memories of watching him and him showing me.
Did your mum wear much makeup when you were growing up?
She did when she was working, she always took and still does take pride in her appearance, it’s definitely where I get it from. She’s lucky though as she doesn’t wear much make up now and she still looks amazing.
What are your current favourite brands?
I am currently using Phillip Kingsley, Bare Minerals, Liz Earle, Josie Maran and Jean Paul Gaultier.
Why do you use certain products?
I use products that I have tended to have used for a while but do go on other recommendations, I find it hard to switch though when you know they work.
What category of beauty do you spend the most on and why?
My hair and face really. My hair takes a lot of work and I have to manage it everyday, it usually takes an hour from start to finish to get ready in the mornings (it drives my partner crazy!).
Do you think some brands charge too much for their products?
In some cases yes, for example I would love to use Jo Malone fragrances more but I think they are too expensive, so I rely on receiving them as gifts now and then.
What matters most about a product: Packaging, Price, Ingredients, Texture, Results or Fragrance?
The results are the most important factor really.
What are your top tips when it comes to skincare?
To be consistent and cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day, keep your skin out of the sun as much as you can.
Is there any products or treatments which you haven’t tried but would like to?
Not really, I’m happy with my routine.
How do you buy your products, in shop, online, recommendation from a friend or a beauty blogger?
Shop and online and as I said before I sometimes take on a recommendation from someone I trust and knows me.
Do you like specific male marketed products or do you prefer to use unisex products or ranges?
I am not ashamed to use female products, I rarely use products aimed at men and I guess because I don’t know if they exist (make up wise).
Speaking of make up? Do you wear it on a day to day basis? Nights out? Special Occasions?
I wear makeup every time I leave my home!
Which makeup products do you use: Primer, Foundation, CC / BB Cream, Bronzer, Concealer, Powder?
I use primer, concealer, cream foundation and powder.
Would you share your beauty products with a partner?
My partner is very rugged and only moisturises and it took me a long time just to get him to do that!
Are there any products or ingredients you’ve found you can’t use due to a reaction or sensitivity?
Do you or have you had any salon treatments?
Very rarely, I do treat myself to a massage now and then but that’s about it.
Have you had any plastic surgery or non surgical procedures like filler or botox?
Do you use any products for your hands, nails or feet?
Yes I use hand cream everyday and I regularly get manicures
What fragrances do you prefer: Citrus, Woody, Spicy? Which are favourite brands??
Tends to be woody vanilla musk, I have used Jean Paul Le Male for over ten years.
Do you find if you receive a gift of beauty or skin care from relatives, it’s usually deodorant or shower gel? If so do you think there should be better gifts for men when it comes to skincare and beauty?
I only get aftershave from relatives and friends, I tend to buy all my own products.
