The world of skincare is vast with a multitude of ingredients used to benefit the skin and some that aren’t so good for the skin. I have tried many products and lots of different ingredients over the past 20 years but I have recently stumbled upon a range which contains an active ingredient called Sangre Del Drago or otherwise known as Dragon’s Blood, which is the plant resin from the Croton Lechleri tree, which is red in colour and is found in the Amazonian rain forests. It was believed in medieval times that it was the blood of Elephants and Dragons who had perished in combat many years before.
Of course that’s not the case it is a plant derived, natural ingredient which the founder of Ekia, Carine Mudry discovered and then took two years to thoroughly research in order to harness its regenerating properties into a complex formula which could be used to improve cell regeneration on the skin. There was a clinical test carried out in 2007 before this range was launched where the dragon’s blood active ingredient was proven to increase cell regeneration by 40% in a 24 hour period and the more mature the skin the more effective it became.
One thing that’s unique about the Ekia brand is that before you select which products you think would be suitable for your skin type, they reccomend you use their skin diagnostic questionnaire on their website to give you bespoke advice as to which products would be best for you and why. After filling out the questionnaire I was recommended the range for weakened mature skin, which has been designed to treat visible signs of ageing on the skin, whether that be wrinkles, lack of firmness or radiance. There are also two other ranges one to maintain a younger skin and the other for someone with greater ageing concerns.
- Creme Intense Corrective Facial Moisturiser £38 – This cream is to be applied morning and evening after cleansing the skin and comes in an airless pump delivery system to maintain the integrity of the potent ingredients. This cream works in a three phase system by regenerating the skin with the Dragons Blood active ingredient, then a combination of Hyaluronic Acid, Samphire, Beech Tree Bud and Commiphora Mukl is blended with an organic oil complex to nourish the skin and improve the appearance of wrinkles, dullness, age spots and lack of firmness. The final stage harnesses the power of the date-stone extract to repair the damaged mechanisms of cell renewal. Personally I am very impressed by this moisturiser, I have been using it for the past couple of weeks and the biggest change I’ve noticed is my skin has greater radiance and is visibly firmer looking. I think it’s a brilliant addition to a guys routine who is looking for greater definition of the facial area.
- Eyelid Firming Serum £38 – I also decided to try this eye serum, which is suitable for all skin types but particularly for those who have noticed a loss of firmness. I have a hereditary hooded eye so I am always looking for solutions to combat the appearance to give me a less aged and tired looking eye area. This organic certified refreshing gel-serum feels cooling on contact with the skin and I noticed from the first application that skin felt and looked firmer. Once again it contains the Dragons Blood active ingredient to regenerate the eye area and is combine with specific firming ingredients of Carragreen Moss, which acts like a micro-mesh over the skin so as it drys it has a tightening effect. For longer term eye firmness the addition of Maritine Blue Thistle and Hyaluronic Acid, work to strengthen and draw moisture to the area to give a youthful appearance. Which I’ve noticed with consistent daily use has only increased the effectiveness of this serum on the look of my eye area. One of the first anti-ageing products which Men typically reach for is an eye cream as this is usually the first to show signs of ageing and I would highly reccomend giving this a try.
Overall I am very pleased with this range and happy to have been able to see how effective the Dragons Blood extract is on my own skin, as when I first heard about it I thought it was a one of those fad, highly marketed ingredients that sounded interesting but didn’t really do much but i’m pleased to say that it is highly effective at regenerating the skin and giving a more youthful appearance.
If you would like to complete the skin diagnostic questionnaire, I would suggest you visit the Ekia website, to see which products are suitable for your skincare concerns. Age isn’t the most important factor when it comes to this range, it’s more about the appearance of the skin and any visible ageing which you’ve noticed. Also this fantastic range has just launched with Holland & Barrett, so be sure to check out the range online or pop in to your local store to find out more.
